Bactrian carpet fragment from Noin-Ula
A rare opportunity to see the now-famous Bactrian carpet fragment from the Xiongnu period, found in an elite Xiongnu burial at Noin-Ula in northern Mongolia. Made in Bactria, far to the southwest, the carpet is a remarkable testament to the long-distance connections of the ancient steppe. It was displayed as part of the Museum Rietberg's exhibition Mongolia: A Journey Through Time, which brought together more than 200 objects and explored Mongolia's history from the Xiongnu and the ancient cities of the steppe through the Mongol Empire and Karakorum to modern Mongolia, highlighting the country's long history of trade, cultural exchange and nomadic life.
The exhibition was part of a wider wave of international exhibitions bringing Mongolian history and heritage to audiences across Europe, particularly as the 800th anniversary of Chinggis Khan's death in 1227 approaches in 2027.
