Avalokitesvara from Matsuoka Museum

Fascinating statue of Avalokitesvara from Matsuoka Museum in Tokyo. Although it is attributed to Sui, c. 581–618 from Taiyuan, it is origin is rather obscure as it appeared in collection before 1975 from an unclear source. It presents Avalokitesvara in an unusually calm, almost impassive expression as an exquisitely adorned celestial prince, covered with an almost overwhelming system of jewels, chains, beast mask, pendants and ribbons. The beast-head ornament is particularly interesting and characteristic of the period.
